What are the 5 types of Salah?

Salah Lock Team

Salah is the second pillar of Islam and the most direct form of communication between a Muslim and Allah. Every day, Muslims around the world perform five obligatory prayers, the 5 types of Salah, each at a specific time from dawn to night. Understanding these prayers, their timings, and their significance is foundational to practicing Islam. For a broader overview, see our complete guide to Salah.

1. Fajr,The Dawn Prayer

Fajr is the first of the 5 types of Salah, prayed before sunrise when the first light appears on the horizon. It consists of 2 fard (obligatory) rakats, preceded by 2 sunnah rakats.

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: “The two rakats of Fajr are better than the world and everything in it” (Muslim). Fajr is considered the prayer that separates the committed believer from the one who is negligent, waking up before dawn to pray requires genuine dedication.

2. Dhuhr,The Midday Prayer

Dhuhr is prayed after the sun passes its zenith (midday). It consists of 4 fard rakats, with 4 sunnah rakats before and 2 after. This prayer serves as a spiritual reset in the middle of the workday, pulling the Muslim back to remembrance of Allah amidst daily responsibilities.

3. Asr,The Afternoon Prayer

Asr is prayed in the late afternoon when the shadow of an object becomes equal to its length (or twice its length, according to some schools). It consists of 4 fard rakats. The Prophet ﷺ warned about neglecting Asr: “Whoever misses the Asr prayer, it is as if he has lost his family and his wealth” (Bukhari).

4. Maghrib,The Sunset Prayer

Maghrib is prayed immediately after the sun sets below the horizon. It consists of 3 fard rakats, followed by 2 sunnah rakats. Unlike the other prayers, Maghrib has a narrow window,it should be prayed promptly, not delayed.

5. Isha,The Night Prayer

Isha is the last of the 5 types of Salah, prayed after twilight disappears. It consists of 4 fard rakats, followed by 2 sunnah rakats and optional Witr (odd-numbered) prayer. The Prophet ﷺ said: “Whoever prays Isha in congregation, it is as if he has prayed half the night” (Muslim).

Beyond the Five: Voluntary Prayers

In addition to these five obligatory prayers, Muslims are encouraged to pray voluntary (nafl) prayers such as Tahajjud (night prayer), Duha (forenoon), and the Sunnah Mu'akkadah (emphasized sunnah prayers). These supplementary prayers strengthen one's connection with Allah and compensate for any shortcomings in the obligatory prayers.

Each of the 5 types of Salah has specific rules and conditions that must be met for the prayer to be valid. Learn about these in our next article on the 9 rules of salah.
